RADIO TO THE TUNE OF £5,000

HOSPITAL Radio South Tyneside is wired for sound after receiving a £5,000 Lottery grant.

The cash will be used to buy new digital equipment that will revolutionise the service.

The charity provides a free broadcasting service to patients in South Tyneside District Hospital, hospices, residential homes and similar institutions through the Patientline system.

Anne Miller, PR and fundraising officer and presenter, said: "This is the 50th year of the station and while that is something to be celebrated, the equipment and studio certainly aren't. We've been making the best of an antiquated system, but now we have the money to buy a system that totally computerises output and moves us into the 21st century.

"Not only does it ease the running of the station – and we're all volunteers here – but the improvement in sound quality will be enormous.

"It also means we're a step further in getting the 38,000 needed to refit the studio.

"There's a long haul ahead of us, but at least the quality of output will be better. We all care deeply about keeping this going, often funding things from our own pockets, so receiving this, our first big money donation, means more to us than we can say."

The grant comes from the Awards for All scheme, which distributes grants of between 300 and 10,000 from Lottery good causes money to voluntary and community groups across the country.

A record number of community groups in South Tyneside benefited from grants worth more than 40,000 in April. Coun Eddie McAtominey, lead member for jobs, enterprise and regeneration at South Tyneside Council, welcomed the increase.

He said: "I'm delighted that such a high number of grants have been awarded in a single month.

"These projects make such a big difference to the quality of so many people's lives and to the community as a whole."
