Ready, steady, Joe for X Factor star
SOUTH Tyneside X Factor winner Joe McElderry is already on the road to success – but now it's 13 miles longer.
The Westoe teenager was today revealed as Teenage Cancer Trust's newest celebrity ambassador and North-East patron.
And, as one of his first tasks, the 19-year-old singer is taking on the Great North Run in September, which finishes in his home town of South Shields.
The heart-throb said: "I am truly honoured to be an ambassador for Teenage Cancer Trust.
"The charity has achieved so much in Newcastle and across the UK, and I hope I can help raise awareness and support for such a great cause."
Joe should be looking at a good debut time in the world's biggest half marathon as he runs almost every day, no matter where he is – at home in South Shields, on holiday with family in Cyprus, or in New York for meetings with record company bosses.
The former Harton Technology College student will join fellow ambassadors – Skins actor Nicholas Hoult, McFly's Harry Judd and Mighty Boosh comic Noel Fielding – in supporting the charity at a national level.
There are 16 specialist units across the country, including one in Newcastle, which Joe helped to open last month.
All cash raised from sponsorship in the run will go towards developing services and facilities for young people diagnosed with cancer in North East England.
Meanwhile, Joe is gearing up to jet off to Los Angeles next week to cut his debut album.
He has already enjoyed chart success, with his debut single The Climb becoming the first chart topper of 2010, and he featured on two other X Factor No1 singles.
Now he's hoping the many meetings he's been to in recent months will help his debut CD notch up plenty of sales and more No1s.
He is due to release the finished article in October.
