TODAY there was a sense of relief among the town centre’s Muslim community that the march had been re-routed.
Dhil Hussain, who owns the street’s Asha Balti House restaurant, said: “The guest house owners and restaurant owners in Ocean Road were unanimous in their agreement that they didn’t want this march to go along the street.
“It is a relief that it is not now going along the street, but I don’t think it should be going ahead at all – it is just designed to incite racial hatred.”
Coun John Anglin, who represents the Beacon and Bents ward for Labour, said: “I think it would have been provocative to go along Ocean Road, and it’s better that is not now happening.
“However, I don’t want them in South Shields at all. We can’t stop them because they have the right to march, but there is a wonderful relationship between different cultures in this town, they co-exist incredibly well.
“The best we can do is not to even acknowledge that the EDL are coming here.”
