RESIDENTS in a South Tyneside street are being driven potty by the poor state of their road.

A petition signed by residents in Marine Approach, South Shields, is to be presented to members of the Riverside Community Area Forum next month.

They are unhappy with the pothole-laden road surfaces and are calling on the council to invest urgently in repairs.

Two consecutive severe winters have caused havoc to the borough’s roads, a fact recognised when the authority was awarded an additional £303,000 in Government funding recently to carry out repairs.

But with so many areas ravaged, the council has the dilemma of deciding which roads they need to prioritise.

The Marine Approach residents have the support of local businessman Ali Hayder, who stood as a Conservative candidate in the Beacon and Bents at May’s Local Elections.

He said: “Residents in Marine Approach and the surrounding streets complained vehemently about the poor state of repair of their road surfaces.

“After a couple of sharp winters, they are ravaged with potholes. Myself and the residents would appeal to council officers to visit these streets to assess, what some believe to be the dangerous nature of these potholes, where urgent repairs are necessary.

“We all know that good road surfaces are an essential element to road safety, and we also appreciate that careful management of the council’s finances needs to be maintained. But we wish this area to be given urgent consideration before another winter totally destroys the road surfaces in Marine Approach.”

A council spokesman said: “We have received a petition from Mr Hayder on this matter.

“It will formally be presented to the Riverside Community Area Forum, after which council officers will prepare a report on the issues raised.”
