Roads update: commuters facing snow chaos

BLIZZARD CONDITIONS ... driving was difficult throughout the North East.

BLIZZARD CONDITIONS ... driving was difficult throughout the North East.

MOTORISTS faced travel chaos as they made their way home tonight after the region suffered a day of heavy snow showers.

Only one main road was reported closed - the B6317 Whickham Highway at Lobley Hill Bank, Gateshead.

The A194 Jarrow road at Tyne Dock roundabout in South Shields was affected by standing water, but remained passable with care.

Most other main roads were passable with care, though traffic was moving extremely slowly around the region.

The following roads were open but passable with care - the A1, A1058 Coast Road, A189 Spine Road and A69.

Police advised road users to take extra care, particularly on untreated minor roads and in reduced visibility.
