A FULL safety review of all the buildings in Ocean Road, South Shields, was ordered today after the shock collapse of a town centre bar.
Council building control officers are to visit every single property along the thoroughfare to ensure all are structurally sound.
The review was ordered by Coun Iain Malcolm, the leader of South Tyneside Council, after the dramatic collapse of Bizz Bar late on Friday evening.
Coun Malcolm said he was confident no major problems would be uncovered but wanted to “put the public’s mind at ease”.
He said: “I’m not suggesting there is any major problem but we’ll be getting building control officers out to all the restaurants and other buildings in the street.
“I know that building control do carry out spot checks as part of their work, but over the next two days they will carry out further checks in Ocean Road to put the public’s mind at ease.
“This could have been a big disaster which could have led to fatalities if people had been walking past at the time, and certainly if the collapse had happened a couple of hours later.
“We can’t afford to take any chances – that’s why these checks are necessary, not because we believe they will uncover any further problems.”
