Sarah has a good hair day for charity

A WOMAN had her flowing locks chopped for charity, in memory of her late grandfather.

Sarah Nichol was devastated when Jimmy Ingram lost his battle with cancer, at the age of 67, in the run-up to Christmas last year.

And now Miss Nichol has handed over 400 to St Clare's Hospice in Jarrow, the centre which took care of her grandfather.

The 23-year-old call centre worker, from Gretna Drive, Jarrow, asked her two managers to split the task of cutting her hair.

Miss Nichol said: "I did it for my grandad. It was really tough for me when he died, and I just wanted to thank St Clare's for taking such good care of him.

"All the family really loved him and we miss him so much – he was a great bloke.

"I've never done anything like this before, so I was a bit nervous, especially since it was my two bosses who cut it off.

"I must have been mad letting them do it, but they did a good job in the end."

Miss Nichol's grandfather is not the first family member to be looked after in St Clare's. Her aunt, Joanne Sowdon, also lost a battle with cancer, at the age of 34, in June last year.

In total, her family has raised 3,500 for the hospice.

This year marks the 21st anniversary of St Clare's Hospice, which is based in Primrose Terrace, Jarrow, and which has provided support for thousands of seriously ill people in the borough.

David Hall, chief executive of the hospice, said: "It is a fantastic achievement by Sarah, and sounds like a great way to raise cash for the hospice.

"It is a big sum of money, and people should not under-estimate how hard it is to raise money like this.

"It never ceases to amaze me, the way people think of new ideas to raise money for us.

"We only get about a third of the money we need from the NHS, so we need people like Sarah, and we're extremely grateful for all the hard work they do."
