Search for missing South Tyneside kayakers ends in tragedy

TWO bodies were recovered from the River Tyne early today as part of a search and rescue operation after three kayakers from South Tyneside went missing.

The grim discovery was made this morning in the Tyne Valley, after three men from the South Shields area were reported missing at 11pm last night.

They had failed to return home after going kayaking in the Hexham area.

Overnight searches were carried out by police, HM Coastguard and a search and rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer.

Officers located one of the missing men’s vehicles at Tyne Green, near Hexham Rowing Club, at just before 1.15am today.

A second vehicle belonging to them was found a few hours later at 4.10am at Wylam train station car park.

During the searches, two kayaks were recovered.

At just after 5.10am, a body was recovered from the river at Riding Mill by RAF Boulmer.

A second body was recovered from the river by RAF Boulmer at just before 6.20am in the Corbridge area.

Formal identification of both is yet to take place, and searches are continuing this morning.
