Semi-finalists unveiled for X Factor-style contest
GUTEN Tag, Pet! Geordie actor Tim Healy met South Shields cancer survivor Michael Balfour at St James's Park yesterday.
Michael, a dedicated Sunderland fan, entered rival territory to unveil the 20 semi-finalists he helped choose for the region's biggest X Factor-style music contest.
Music Means Life gives up-and-coming artists the chance to perform on stage, with proceeds from ticket sales going to the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT).
The money will be spent on the 1.9m rebuild of the TCT unit at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, where Michael, 16, was treated for a rare form of nasal cancer two years ago.
Now in remission, his family are a driving force behind fundraising for the new unit.
Auf Wiedersehen, Pet! star Healy said: "It's great to see the fortunate teenagers giving something back to those who aren't so fortunate."
* Four acts from South Tyneside made the final cut. Find out who they are in tomorrow's Gazette.
