SOUTH Tyneside Council’s new £2.3m waterfront park has received a special award.

The CEEQUAL Client and Design Award represents more than two years of work by a network of designers working on Harton Quays Park in South Shields, including Grant Associates and Mott MacDonald.

Harton Quays Park is joint-funded by the council and the Homes and Communities Agency and is being constructed by Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering.

When complete, the park will stretch along the River Tyne from South Shields ferry landing to the Customs House, and feature curved embankments, an amphitheatre, promenade and high specification landscaping, including the planting of mature trees.

Coun Michael Clare, South Tyneside Council’s lead member for regeneration and economy, said: “Harton Quays Park is already a major success for the borough.

“This award is recognition of our partnership work with leading organisations. Harton Quays Park is a wonderful way to showcase our business and heritage assets.

“It will become a key component in unifying the different elements of South Shields riverside.

“The waterfront park will symbolise the borough’s vision of regeneration and enhance our future plans.”

CEEQUAL is an awards scheme for civil engineering, infrastructure, landscaping and the public sector. The award is for projects of high environmental and social performance.

Harton Quays Park received a commendation as part of the award assessment.

Simon Longshaw, engineering design team leader at Mott MacDonald, said: “We are delighted that the Harton Quays Park has been recognised with this CEEQUAL award.

“The consultancy has been involved on the wider South Shields Riverside Regeneration Scheme for over five years, advising on sustainable development principles which have become an integral part of the first key phase of public realm works.”

Harton Quays Park is being developed as part of the wider regeneration plan for South Shields riverside programme and is due for completion in the next few months.
