Slash speed limit to 20mph - would-be Euro MP

SPEED limits should be slashed to 20 mph on most South Tyneside roads, says a would-be Euro MP.

NE Green Party Euro candidate Shirley Ford says the move would reduce accidents, improve safety, boost air quality, and increase walking and cycling, according to experts.

Mrs Ford said: "As the cost of motoring skyrockets, now is surely the time to promote sustainable, safer and also cheaper alternatives.

"Lots more people would cycle around Tyneside and Wearside if only they felt it was safe for them to do so – reducing the speed limit to 20 mph would go a long way to achieving just that."

Mrs Ford acknowledged there are already some 20mph limits within South Tyneside – near schools and in some residential areas – but said the reduced limit should apply to all roads, except major routes.

"The bottom line is that speed kills and the difference between 30mph and 20mph can be the difference between life and death," she said.
