SLIMMERS in South Tyneside are preparing to pull on their walking shoes for a charity trek.

Members from the St Lawrence’s Church Slimming World group, based in Centenary Avenue, South Shields, will be joining fellow slimmers on Saturday to help boost funds for Cancer Research UK.

The Slimming World does Race for Life event, which starts at 2pm, will see walkers trekking the three miles from Souter Lighthouse car park in Coast Road, Whitburn, to Bents Park in Sea Road, South Shields, where everyone will be invited to take part in a picnic.

Organisers are hoping lots of people will turn up on the day to raise as much cash as possible.

Tina Harley, who runs the Harton branch of the weight-loss group, said: “We’d love anyone in South Tyneside to join us, whether they’re young, old, male or female, and whatever their current fitness level.

“Anyone who wants to take part can run, walk or even dance the distance.

“As long as they cross the finish line we don’t mind.

“Hopefully the event will show people just how motivating being part of a group like ours can be.”

The St Lawrence’s group’s race is part of a national event running across all Slimming World groups between July 21 and August 3.

The race is not competitive, and those taking part can choose the distance they’d like to cover – 1km, 3km, 5km or more.

For more information call Tina on 07725 796450.
