South Shields striker Warren Byrne makes TV appearance on Soccer AM

Byrne's net-buster against Tow Law Town last Saturday has been viewed more than 3.5million times online.

It has also been featured by broadcasters across the world, won the CNN goal of the week award and been suggested as a possible candidate for the Puskas Award - given to the best goal scored in the world in a calendar year.

The 33-year-old's week reached another high, though, when he appeared on popular Saturday morning football show Soccer AM, shown on Sky 1 and Sky Sports 1.

After being invited to the show on Wednesday, Byrne travelled down to the show's London studio on Friday before appearing on it the following morning.

Byrne played the part of the "Full Kit Banker" on one of the show's regular features.

It saw the striker wear his full South Shields FC kit - including the number 14 shirt he made famous with his volley against Tow Law.

Following a short chat with show host John Fendley, Byrne's goal against Tow Law was shown, and he then played a part in a section of Soccer AM called "Strip Club".

Byrne's goal has been compared to a similar strike by England international Dele Alli for Tottenham Hotspur against Crystal Palace.

And the Shields player even received a message from the midfielder on the show, who praised the goal and jokingly invited him to Spurs for a trial.

Speaking after the show, Byrne said: "It was fantastic to be invited down to the show, and I had a great time meeting everyone and playing a small part.

"Just to be invited was an honour, and something totally unexpected.

"To get a message from Dele also topped it off - although he couldn't quite bring himself to say my goal was better than his!

"I can't quite believe how many people have viewed the goal and how popular it has become.

"My Twitter has been crazy for a week, and every time I've looked at my phone, there's been somebody else talking about it.

"My phone has never stopped, and I'm sure that will be the case again now people have seen me on TV."

Also on Soccer AM were former Chelsea and Manchester United player Ray Wilkins, WWE star Sheamus and actor Tom Davis.

Byrne, though, could not live up to his goalscoring heroics in the end of show game outside, with a giant version of German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer saving his penalty in the car park.

It will be back to reality for Byrne on Tuesday, with he and his South Shields team-mates to take on Hebburn Town at Mariners Park in a big derby match.
