A SOUTH Tyneside woman has been killed in a road smash on the A1.

The 81-year-old was travelling on the single stretch of the carriageway when the car she was in collided with a lorry.

The accident happened near the Berwick bypass, 100 yards north of Haggerston, at just before 12pm on Monday.

The woman, who police have confirmed is from South Shields, was cut free by firefighters from her Nissan Note before she was taken to Wansbeck General Hospital in Ashington, but she died en route.

The driver of the lorry, a 55-year-old man, escaped injury.
