South Tyneside takes green route
SOUTH Tynesiders are getting on their bikes to cut their carbon footprints.
They're also more likely to use public transport for local journeys than their car, says a new survey.
But, while 28 per cent of people in the borough say they are environment-friendly, 29 per cent say they don't do anything to contribute to going green.
The study, launched this week, found that many people in South Tyneside are adopting environment-friendly habits as part of their everyday routines.
The survey, commissioned by the Energy Saving Trust and ClimateNE, discovered that 58 per cent of people in South Tyneside are more likely to use their bike or bus than their car.
Of the 1,468 people surveyed, 89 per cent are cutting back on what they throw away when it comes to items such as clothes or food, compared with 79 per cent of people in County Durham.
The survey also found that 48 per cent of people in South Tyneside are worried about the impact of local industry on carbon emissions.
The new report, dubbed Green Barometer North East, is the first area-specific survey of public attitudes towards green behaviour across the region.
Coun Jim Perry, lead member environment and transport, said: "South Tyneside Council is committed to the creation of a cleaner, greener and safer borough and we are very encouraged by the way that local people are doing their bit for the environment by making positive changes to their lives.
''We have rolled out our new blue recycling bins scheme and are seeing a big increase in the number of people who are recycling their waste.
"We are also involved in projects to build new energy-efficient homes and are determined to capitalise on our position in the low-carbon economic area.
''Though we are making great strides, we are not complacent. We will continue to work with our partners to inspire our residents and businesses to make the changes that will protect our environment for future generations.''
Adrian Hilton, ClimateNE co-ordinator, said: ''It is fantastic news that people are taking measures to help the environment.
"There is no doubt that climate change is the biggest environmental challenge facing the world today, and the North East is already in a strong position, with hundreds of innovative projects taking place."
