Speed clampdown on danger road

MORE traffic calming measures are to be put in place to cut speeding on a South Tyneside road.

Members of Boldon, Cleadon and Whitburn community area forum agreed to contribute 5,000 towards the 15,500 cost of the project in Lizard Lane.

The rest will come out of South Tyneside Council's highways budget.

The scheme will cover a three-mile stretch of road, from Marsden in South Shields to North Guards in Whitburn.

Coun Sylvia Spraggon, Labour member for Whitburn and Marsden, said: "A petition was brought by quite a few people.

"That road is very busy now, traffic comes along at quite high speeds.

"There have been a number of accidents and we feel it is worthwhile to put something towards it."

The funding was granted, despite objections from Couns David Potts and Don Wood, Conservative members for Cleadon and East Boldon, who said it was too much to give to one project.
