STUDENT COUPLE MAKE THE GRADE

COMPETITIVE couple John Marnie and Rachel Bell went head to head in their A-levels.

The couple, who live and study together in South Shields, decided to make things more interesting by pitting themselves against each other.

And although the pair, who attended South Tyneside College, both scored top grades, Rachel, 19, came out on top because of previous exams.

She said: "I won! I split my A-levels over three years because I didn't like maths and I wanted to take more art subjects.

"We've been quite competitive, but the house has been filled with cards for both of us."

Rachel got A-levels in textiles and photography and an AS-level in graphics, to add to the ICT A-level and psychology AS-level she got last year.

The couple, who met on the Internet, celebrated with a takeaway meal.

John, 21, originally from Fife in Scotland, got A grades in photography and AS-level graphics, to add to the B in AS-level psychology and a cluster of Scottish grades he achieved.

They are very competitive with each other, but Rachel just beat John by completing an additional qualification this year.

After completing their studies the couple plan to have a gap year, during which they hope to gain work experience using their artistic qualifications.

Rachel added: "We hope to go on to university, but who knows?

"It depends what happens in the gap year – we might get an apprenticeship or work we really enjoy.

"It's most likely we will do a foundation degree at the college but we'll just have to see what happens in the next 12 months."
