Students can avoid taxing times

SOUTH Tyneside students could be in line for an early Christmas present from the taxman.

Many students in the borough will be taking on seasonal work over the festive period to boost their funds.

And HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is reminding them that they may not need to pay income tax if their earnings are below their personal allowance for the year.

There are about 67,500 students studying across Tyne and Wear, and those intending to work over the festive season won't be taxed if they expect to bring in less than 6,475 in the year to next April.

They must also complete a form P38 (S) at the beginning of their employment.

Students can find all the information they need at www.direct. gov.uk/studenttaxadvice

Jane Frost, of HMRC, said: "Before starting any vacation job, it's a good idea to make sure you know about tax.

"Ensuring your tax code is right from the start of your paid employment can save you money.

"We want to help students understand how the tax system works, so they don't pay more than they should and also get back what is due."
