Students come out on top at beauty awards
HAIR and beauty students from South Tyneside proved that had the look when they turned on the style at a major awards ceremony.
South Tyneside College took the Regional College of the Year award – for the 11th year running – and its students also cleaned up in the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists Awards.
They took home six first places, four second places and a third – as well as providing the team and student of the year.
The competition, one of the most prestigious in the hair and beauty industry, was held at the Federation Brewery, in Gateshead, and featured scores of colleges and schools from across North East England.
Chloe Williamson, 18, from South Shields, who was crowned Hairdressing Student of the Year, said: "I was so happy when they said I had won. I have worked really hard, and to be named Student of the Year was just amazing."
Andrew Parkes, head of hairdressing, added: "Hairdressing and beauty therapy at the college has built a great reputation over the years for quality teaching and learning, and we continually work hard to offer the best training to our students and show the talent we have at South Tyneside College."
Beauty lecturer Karen Cummings said: "We have had a fantastic year in the beauty department, and this is the icing on the cake.
"We concentrate on developing the creative talents of our students to make them commercially viable in a fast-moving fashion industry. Well done to all the winners."
Now the students will travel to Blackpool on March 21 to compete in the national AHT awards.
Principal Lindsey Whiterod said: "This is such an achievement for the college. The department has held the title for 11 consecutive years, which is an accomplishment in itself.
"They have all worked so hard and as a college we are extremely proud."
