Sun comes out for Summer Festival
THE sun put its hat on today for the start of this year's South Tyneside Summer Festival.
Hundreds turned out for the traditional launch of the festivities - the Cookson Parade, which was started by Alda Pereira, the mayor of Noisy-le-Sec in France, one of South Shields' twin towns.
Representatives of schools, community groups and health organisations marched the route from South Shields Town Hall to Bents Park, where a host of free fun events was on offer all afternoon.
The parade this year had a decidedly fishy theme, with marchers adopting a host of sea-themed designs, incorporating jellyfish, seahorses and deep sea monsters.
