SUNDERLAND is preparing for an invasion of Carlisle United fans this weekend as the two clubs meet in the FA Cup.
The 3rd Round tie is at the Stadium of Light at 2pm on Sunday, and thousands of Carlisle fans are expected to make the relatively-short journey over the Pennines.
They are being encouraged to travel on organised coaches, and about 70 are expected to leave the Cumbrian town at about 10am.
The coaches will travel along the A69 to the stadium and police are advising motorists there may be delays.
Heavy traffic is expected on the route from Carlisle – the A69/A1/A1231/A1290 – between 10.30am and 1.30pm.
The return journey is expected to be from 4pm onwards.
Northumbria Police Temporary Chief Superintendent Andy McDyer said: “It’s anticipated there will be around 70 coaches travelling along the route, which may cause some delays.
“We want to give motorists advance warning that there will be additional traffic on the roads so they can plan their journey accordingly and, if necessary, find an alternative route.
“Police will be working to keep any congestion to an absolute minimum, and we would like to thank motorists in advance for their patience.”
