Supporting soldiers at the double

A FOOTBALL stalwart has twin reasons to support our soldiers engaged in conflict overseas.

John Topping, chairman of Jarrow's Primrose Community Centre Football Club, took part in this year's Great North Run.

It was the 18th time he had competed in the Newcastle to South Shields half-marathon.

This year, he donated the 755 he raised to the Support Our Soldiers charity.

Mr Topping's twin sons are in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (Reme).

James has completed two tours to Afghanistan, while his brother Jonathan is to be deployed on his first in March.

Mr Topping, who also manages the community centre's under-seven team, said: "The Support Our Soldiers charity does a lot of good work."
