A TAXI driver was taken to hospital and a Land Rover destroyed by fire after a crash on a South Tyneside road tonight.
Fire crews were called to put out the blazing Discovery vehicle after it was in collision with a Skoda Octavia taxi shortly after 6pm.
The Land Rover turned on its side after the collision, which happened in Durham Drive, Fellgate, Jarrow.
The taxi driver was taken to South Tyneside District Hospital after complaining of a rib injury. It is not thought anyone else was injured.
David Barnes, crew manager at Hebburn fire station, said: “When we arrived we found a Land Rover Discovery on its side and well alight.
“We put out the fire and it is a write off.
“The driver of the Skoda was taken away in an ambulance as a precaution after complaining of pain in the rib area.”
The road was temporarily closed following the crash.
