Teams urged to join cancer fundraiser

A MUM whose life has been touched by cancer is urging others to help raise cash to fight the disease.

Teacher Ann Walsh, from East Boldon, has already lost her father, friends and colleagues to the disease, and now her mother and sister

are fighting bowel and breast cancer.

The mum-of-three is the local organiser for Relay for Life, which is being held in South Tyneside next month.

And Mrs Walsh, 49 is hoping teams will get on board for the next event on July 12 and 13.

This is the second time the event – which started life in America 20 years ago – has been held in Jarrow, and Mrs Walsh wants to make it an even bigger success.

Last year's event raised a massive 20,000 but Mrs Walsh, who is chairman of Cancer Research UK's Relay For Life, has set her sights high and is hoping to double that this year.

She said: "As one in three people will be affected by cancer at some point in their lives, it's an opportunity to remember those lost to cancer, support those who are facing cancer and help prevent cancer."

The Relay For Life will take place at Monkton Stadium and will be staged over a 20-hour period – running from 2pm on Saturday, July 12, until 10am on Sunday, July 13.

Team-mates will take turns to run or walk around the track, making sure there's at least one member on it at all times.

Mrs Walsh added: "We are looking for teams of eight to 10 people to run, walk or crawl around the track, and enjoy the party atmosphere, which will include team games, bands and numerous fun activities.

"As the relay is non-stop throughout the night, team members not on the track can take turns to rest, eat or sleep in their tents."

Teams are encouraged to raise as much money as possible. At dusk on Relay For Life day, a Candle of Hope ceremony begins.
