Teen girl driver arrested after hit and run smash

A TEENAGE girl who crashed a 4x4 into garage before hitting a neighbour's property has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

Police say the 17-year-old lost control of the silver Daihatsu Terious as she drove along St George's Avenue in Westoe, South Shields, at 4.47am yesterday.

Unable to stop, she smashed through the driveway gates of a house before crashing into a garage door, causing it to buckle.

Police say the driver then reversed the vehicle from the garden, but as she headed towards Redhead Avenue, she again lost control of it, hitting the corner of a neighbour's property.

The teenager is then alleged to have fled the scene, but was later arrested by police on suspicion of drink-driving and taking a vehicle without the owner's consent.

She was taken to South Shields police station at Millbank, where she was interviewed, before being released on bail, pending further inquiries.

A structural engineer was called out to carry out a check of the property in St George's Avenue, after cracks appeared in the wall.

A police spokeswoman said: "The silver Daihatsu Terious left the road and hit a gate before crashing into a house next door.

"Police and the fire service attended, and a 17-year-old girl from South Shields was arrested."

South Tyneside traffic officer Pc Reg Atkinson said: "The driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, hitting the side of a property in St George's Avenue, causing substantial damage.

"Inquiries into the collision are still ongoing."
