The lowdown on high fences

COUNCILLORS have helped give pensioners much-needed privacy.

Ken McGeorge, of Redwell Lane, Marsden, approached his ward councillors after he became concerned that people using a lane at the back of his garden could see into his property.

Councillors Tracey Dixon, Sylvia Spraggon and Peter Boyack, visited the bungalows, which are mainly occupied by pensioners and have low fences, and pledged to help.

Cash from South Tyneside Homes's sustainability fund, which is filtered through the community area forum, was used to sort the problem out.

Coun Dixon said: "Ward councillors are able to use the cash to implement schemes which will benefit the community, and we felt that this was a very worthy cause.

"This will give residents that extra bit security and peace of mind."

Mr McGeorge, 81, who lives with his wife Violet, added: "They've done a very good job with and I'm very pleases with my new fence."
