Thousands turn out for Whitley Bay heroes

VICTORY was doubly sweet for football heroes when thousands turned out to celebrate their success.

FA Vase winners Whitley Bay FC were cheered all the way when they toured the town in an open-top bus at the weekend.

The coastal town ground to a virtual halt as cheering crowds showed their appreciation for the team's 2-0 victory over Glossop North Town at London's Wembley Stadium on May 10.

Paul Chow and Lee Kerr, both from Jarrow, scored the goals that got them the cup.

The bus, packed with players and young fans, left the club's Hillheads ground at noon to a standing ovation, before completing a loop of the town via the seafront, Cullercoats, Tynemouth and Monkseaton.

Bay defender David Coulson said: "This is what winning last week is all about, but it's not just about us. This was for the fans."
