Three people were injured when a lorry hit a South Tyneside bridge and its digger fell off crushing the car behind
It’s understood the lorry hit the railway bridge and the digger, which it was transporting, toppled off onto the Vauxhall Antara behind.
Firefighters from Hebburn Fire Station spent more than an hour cutting the driver free, before they were taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary by the Great North Air Ambulance, with serious injuries.
Two other passengers, who were self-rescued, were taken to South Tyneside District Hospital in South Shields, with minor injuries.
The west bound carriageway has now been reopened, but the east bound remains closed with diversions at Mill Lane.
The Metro service is also currently suspended between Pelaw and Brockley Whins.
