Top marks for schools

EDUCATION chiefs are celebrating after gaining top marks in an Ofsted inspection.

The schools' watchdog gave children services in the borough an overall rating of 'good' in its annual performance assessment, as well as highlighting some outstanding features.

Coun Jim Foreman, lead member for children and young people, said: "This report is outstanding and a ringing endorsement of everything we have in place.

"It is excellent news for our young people, their parents and carers, and recognises the council's contribution to improving outcomes for our children.

"I see this as a point in a fantastic journey of improvement for South Tyneside, and the services we deliver."

Inspectors said the council had improved in areas which needed tackling, and were highlighted in last year's assessment.

They include improvements in GCSE results and attendance rates.

Their report also highlighted the local authority's improvement in safety, healthy living and children's well-being.

Mr Foreman added: "My congratulations go to everyone working in education and children's social work, as well as staff in our schools; youth, play, children's centres and nurseries.

"These achievements are a credit to all of them.

"They are also a testament to the hard work and dedication of our former executive director, Kim Bromley-Derry, who left last week for pastures new.

"Kim was an excellent leader and his team always go the extra mile to give our children the best possible opportunities to develop their potential.

"Above all, Ofsted reports that here in South Tyneside; 'the council puts children and young people at the heart of everything it does', and, 'has designed many of its services and systems to include the voice of children and young people'.

"No one says we're perfect, there is still an awful lot to do if we are serious about transforming the life chances of the next generation.

"This assessment gives South Tyneside a big thumbs-up, and shows we are moving in the right direction for the people that matter most – our children and our young people."
