Tributes pour in for tragic Pc Neil
TRIBUTES are pouring in for a respected South Tyneside police officer killed in a horrific road smash.
Pc Neil Gartland died when his car became trapped between two fuel tankers on the A19 on Friday.
The fatal collision was the first in a series of three crashes, which resulted in a 31-vehicle pile-up in foggy conditions.
Pc Gartland, who was a 24/7 response officer at South Tyneside Area Command, was off-duty when he became involved in the crash at about 10.10pm.
As news broke of the tragedy, colleagues were left shocked and devastated.
They have now set up a group on networking site Facebook – R.I.P Neil – always remembered – in tribute to the popular officer, who worked in the borough for eight years.
Already a number of officers have joined the group, while messages have been left describing how he will be a "big miss".
Paying tribute to Pc Gartland, Chief Superintendent Mark Dennett, of Northumbria Police, said: "Neil was an outstanding officer, totally dedicated to serving the public.
"So much so, that he recently fought his way back from injury to continue serving as a frontline cop.
"He was immensely popular with all his colleagues, both at South Tyneside and throughout the force.
"Everyone who knew Neil will miss him greatly.
"My heartfelt sympathies, and those of all staff at South Tyneside area command, lie with Neil's wife and family."
Durham Police are investigating the accident, which happened on the stretch of road between Peterlee and Wellfield.
It involved a petrol tanker, a diesel tanker, two lorries and a car.
Shortly afterwards, there were two further crashes involving more than 20 vehicles, including a police car.
Fire crews called to the scene said they found "absolute devastation", with a large number of people trapped in vehicles.
Ten people were taken to hospital with injuries.
In all, 31 vehicles were involved – two tankers, two 38-tonne HGVs, a minibus with no passengers and 26 private cars and vans.
