Tributes ... former Shields Gazette reporter Ian Laws.

MORE tributes today poured in for former Shields Gazette journalist Ian Laws.

The 41-year-old, pictured, who was a news reporter in the 1990s, died at his home on Thursday night.

After leaving the Gazette, he joined sister paper the Sunderland Echo and covered his beloved Sunderland AFC.

Black Cats midfielder David Meyler took to Twitter to pay his respects.

He wrote: “So sad to hear the news about Ian Laws. A true gent and lovely man, thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.”

Chief executive, Margaret Byrne, said: “Everyone at the club was shocked and saddened to learn of Ian’s untimely passing.

“On behalf of the directors, players and staff of Sunderland AFC, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to Ian’s family and friends.”

BBC Newcastle sports reporter – and fellow former Gazette reporter Martin Emmerson, added: “Terrible news today re the death of my mate Ian Laws, long-time SAFC fan and great football writer.”

Sunderland-born England women’s international Steph Houghton said: “RIP Ian Laws. SAFC and football mad, always helped push the women’s game 4ward. Thoughts with his family.”
