SEARCH MISSION ... rescue personnel retrieve a kayak at Riding Mill Pumping station on the River Tyne.

TWO bodies were recovered this morning in the search for the missing South Shields kayakers, but the search is continuing for the third.

The trio failed to return home from a trip to the Tyne Valley yesterday, and a search began at 11pm last night.

One of the missing men’s vehicles was found at Tyne Green, near to Hexham Rowing Club, just before 1.15am today.

A second vehicle belonging to them was found a few hours later, at 4.10am, at Wylam railway station car park.

Two kayaks have also been recovered from the group, who were from the South Shields area of South Tyneside.

A green kayak could be seen on the side of the river at Riding Mill pumping station as water thundered through the weir.

Flying low over the river, a Sea King helicopter was searching for the group in the area.

Landing in a nearby field, rescue teams studied maps of the scene as they carried out the search.
