A MAN and woman from Tyneside were among three people who died in a crash which closed the A1 at the weekend, it has been revealed.

Leroy Carrington, 68, and Sheila Carrington, 58, from Killingworth, North Tyneside, died after the collision near Ranby, in Nottinghamshire, on Sunday night.

The couple were both pronounced dead at the scene after their Peugeot 206 was in collision with a Vauxhall Astra.

A passenger in the Astra, Roderick Franks, 58, from St Albans, Hertfordshire, also died after being taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre.

A stretch of the A1 between Blyth and Five Lane Ends, near Worksop, was closed in both directions following the accident at 11.20pm on Sunday.

Officers said the Peugeot was travelling on the northbound carriageway when it was in collision with the Vauxhall Astra heading southbound.

The 26-year-old driver of the Astra was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A tarpaulin, similar to those used for domestic trailers, has been recovered and crash investigators are urging anyone who may have lost it to contact them.

Anyone with information which could assist the inquiry is urged to contact police on 101.
