United's last 1951 FA Cup hero dies at 85

THE last surviving member of Newcastle United's 1951 FA Cup winning team has died at the age of 85.

He had been suffering from Alzheimer's Disease for more than a decade, and passed away in North Tyneside General Hospital on Saturday night.

During his career, the half-back and defender scored five goals for his team from the defence.

In 2003 his footprints were set in concrete in the "hall of fame" at St James's Metro station.

Following his diagnosis of Alzheimer's his daughter set up The Charlie Crowe Appeal to raise money for a scanner to detect early signs of the disease.
