A MAN has today been arrested in connection with an accident which left a four-year-old girl fighting for her life.

The youngster, who has not been named, suffered serious head injuries in the crash in Leam Lane, near the Lindisfarne Roundabout at Jarrow, at 6.30pm yesterday.

She is in a critical condition at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Earlier today, police appealed for witnesses to the crash, which happened when a silver Peugeot 406 struck the rear of a red VW Polo, on the westbound carriageway of the road.

The collision sparked a five-vehicle crash, and the injured girl was a back-seat passenger in the Polo.

It has now been revealed that police have arrested a 34-year-old on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He is currently helping officers with their inquiries.

They are keen to speak to any motorists who were in the area and may have seen what happened.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Motor Patrols South on 101, ext 69191.
