Victims' charity offers kids respite

YOUNGSTERS whose lives have been devastated by death came to South Tyneside for a weekend of respite.

The National Victims' Association (NVA) charity, set up by Jarrow dad Dave Hines, brought 10 children and their carers to the region as part of its Sibling Care Scheme.

Launched earlier this year, the scheme gives young people affected by murder or manslaughter a chance to meet other youngsters who have had similar experiences.

Throughout the two-day visit last month, the group was treated to a cinema visit at Cineworld, in Boldon, and meals at Pizza Hut and McDonald's.

They also visited the Wet 'n' Wild pool in North Shields, and Washington Wildfowl Park.

The youngsters enjoyed a free breakfast at the Jarrow Caf, in Grange Road, and stayed at the Little Haven Hotel, in South Shields.

Mr Hines, said: "I just want to say thank you to everyone involved who helped to make it a fantastic weekend for all the kids involved.

"They were all absolutely fantastic, and are looking forward to coming back to South Tyneside in the future."

Youngsters came from across North East England, as well as the rest of the UK.

Mr Hines, who set up the NVA after his daughter Marie was murdered, added: "I received a lovely card from the young people thanking me for the weekend, and I would like to thank everyone for the compassion they showed to us all."

Owner of Jarrow Caf, Cecil Bondin, said: "It was my pleasure to invite the children along and treat them to a free meal and drinks.

"I have known Dave for a long time, and I try and do anything I can to help him and his charity."

Anyone who would like to help NVA should contact Mr Hines on 423 2210.
