WORKERS were this afternoon frantically trying to stop the swollen River Tyne seeping into a South Shields arts venue.
A storm surge at about 3.15pm saw the river burst its banks and begin flowing towards the Customs House at Mill Dam.
Workers from the Environement Agency, helped by staff from South Tyneside Council and the police, began sandbagging the doors of the building’s community rooms to protect them from flooding.
The car park behind the venue in Dalton Lane was submerged beneath water which was 2ft deep in places.
At least two dozen vehicles had been left there, and owners faced a race against time to get them out before they were damaged.
