A SOUTH Tyneside MP joined surfers to help clean up a borough beach.
Emma Lewell-Buck, MP for South Shields, took part in a litter pick and clean-up operation at Whitburn beach on Saturday.
The two-hour event was organised by Surfers Against Sewage, an environmental charity which aims to protect the UK’s oceans, waves and beaches for people to enjoy safely and sustainably.
Members of the group were joined by volunteers who signed up for the beach clean on the internet as well as Mrs Lewell-Buck, who is a member of the Select Committee for Environment, Food and Rural affairs.
Event organiser Dom Ferris, from Surfers Against Sewage, said: “It’s important to raise awareness of the problems of litter on our beaches.
“We were really happy to have Emma join us.
“It’s fantastic that she got her hands dirty and joined in.
“There are huge problems with litter on our beaches and we need to make the Government aware of it and try to come up with a solution to improve the quality of our beaches for everyone.”
