Wheel of fortune spins for charity
A CHARITY committed to preventing young people in South Tyneside from falling into a life of crime has received a major cash boost.
The Wheels Project, in Hebburn, trains socially or educationally disadvantaged teenagers who have an interest in motor vehicles.
It has received a 9,902 grant from the Big Lottery Fund, through its Awards for All Programme.
The Wheels Project started about 15 years ago and educates young people aged between eight and 25 in South Tyneside who are in danger of becoming involved in crime by running motor vehicle training, road safety classes, employment preparation and sessions in life and basic skills.
Project Manager Bob Neill, said: "We're delighted with the grant. It is to be spent setting up a new venture in engineering skills.
"Another company donated an old lathe to us and we're looking to employ an engineer part time to teach people some of the traditional skills from industries like shipbuilding and mining that are dying out.
"We hope it will make a big difference and encourage more youngsters to come along."
Awards for All was launched on April 1 2009, and had 45m to distribute to community projects around the country.
To mark its first anniversary, 30 grants were given to groups in North East England.
Big Lottery Fund's Head of the North East Region, James Turner said: "Communities the length and breadth of North East England are benefiting from today's announcement of funding from the Awards for All programme.
"The range of projects receiving grants, from schemes providing life skills for young people to others offering recreational activities for those of an older age, serves to show how the programme continues to make positive changes to the lives of people in greatest need. Here's hoping they provide inspiration for others who are thinking of making an application on their own."
