White Ribbon Day will highlight abuse

PEOPLE across South Tyneside are being urged to join forces and unite against domestic abuse.

'Don't suffer in silence' is the message going out to victims who have been targeted by abusive partners.

On Wednesday, White Ribbon Day will be marked in the borough to highlight the different agencies who can help.

The day, first launched in 1991 by a group of Canadian men, calls for people to wear a white ribbon as a pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about domestic violence against women.

Throughout the day South Tyneside Council's Domestic Violence Team will be handing out white ribbons and offering advice to domestic abuse victims.

Pupils from Jarrow School are also backing the campaign through artwork aimed at encouraging victims to come forward and get help.

The Mayor of South Tyneside, Coun John Anglin, said: "In South Tyneside we understand the importance of White Ribbon Day, and raising awareness of the issues facing women and children experiencing domestic violence.

"Domestic abuse has in the past often been hidden, a crime that can take place behind closed doors.

"It's all the more shocking as the victims know the people who are perpetrating a range of abusive behaviour against them.

"It can also have a devastating effect on the wellbeing of children who witness violence in their homes.

"We don't want these families to be suffering in silence. We hope that people will show their support for the cause and wear a white ribbon next week."

Information on the various agencies will also be available for men who either commit or are victims of domestic violence.

Events will be held at Asda Boldon on Monday and Asda South Shields on Wednesday, both between 10am and 3pm.

On Friday a bag pack will be held at Morrisons, in Jarrow, to raise cash for charities which help victims including Options, the Women's Refuge and Women's Health in South Tyneside.
