A WOMAN remains in hospital fighting for life - four days after a horror road crash in which a digger fell from a lorry and crushed her car.
A low loader flatbed wagon carrying three diggers was travelling on the A194 eastbound, near to the York Avenue garage slip road in Jarrow at about 11am on Sunday, when one of the diggers fell off the back of the vehicle and crushed a Vauxhall Antara following behind.
The driver of the Vauxhall, a 33-year-old woman, suffered life threatening injuries and was airlifted to the RVI for treatment.
She is currently in a critical but stable condition and remains in hospital.
Two passengers in the vehicle, a woman, and a child were taken to South Tyneside hospital for treatment.
A section of the road was closed for about 15 hours on Sunday to allow for collision investigations to be carried out.
Officers are eager to speak to anyone who was travelling on the A194 at the time of the crash and who saw what happened.
They are particularly keen to contact a motorbike rider who was travelling on the road at the time of the crash and who may have witnessed the collision.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact motor patrols officers on 101 ext 69191, quoting reference 483 13/04/14.
