Woman, 88, duped of cash by bogus caller
POLICE have issued a bogus caller warning after two pensioners and a woman in her 50s were targeted by a conman.
An 88-year-old woman was duped into handing over cash when he called at her home in Wouldhave Court, South Shields, at about 11.40am yesterday, saying he had a parcel for her.
He then called at the home of an 87-year-old man in Livingstone Place, and a 52-year-old woman at Mortimer Road, both South Shields, making the same claim. Neither handed over cash.
The man was in his 40s, 5ft 8in, and stocky, and was wearing dark clothing.
Acting Detective Chief Inspector Christina Barrett said: "We are asking people to remain extra vigilant at all times and make sure to check identity cards, which should include a photograph of the caller and details of the company."
