Women can celebrate Eid in Shields

WOMEN can join in celebrations of the Muslim festival of Eid in South Shields tomorrow.

Eid Celebration for Women will be held at the Customs House at Mill Dam from 11am.

There will be lots of activities, such as salsa dancing, kite and lantern making, healthy walks and traditional halal food.

The celebration aims to promote arts and culture, health and wellbeing, fire safety and community cohesion.

Event organiser Anissa Hussain, a community development worker for South Tyneside Primary Care Trust, said: "Celebrating cultural festivals brings communities together."

The event, which is also being organised by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and the Options Project, is free and open to women of all ages.

It comes after Eid – which was celebrated last Sunday – and marked the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

Anita Wan, cultural development officer at the Customs House, added: "It is going to be a great day."
