World Cup worth £60m to North East
NORTH East England could bag almost £60m if World Cup football comes to the region.
NewcastleGateshead Initiative calculated that 58m will be generated if its joint bid is successful.
The biggest boost to the area would come from the potential number of international visitors who would contribute an estimated total of 48m into the local economy, with more than 90 per cent expected to stay overnight for a minimum of four nights.
Figures suggest 60 per cent of domestic visitors are expected to visit the region with no tickets to matches, with 81 per cent of them expected to visit the region just for the day.
Andrew Dixon, chief executive of NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: "The study suggests what we thought: hosting the 2018 World Cup would be monumental for the entire region.
"It would ensure a significant boost in commercial investment while creating vital jobs and leaving a legacy of culture and sport."
Sunderland is also in the running to host games, with a recent report suggesting 25m would be brought in.
