Yobs attack man, 92, in his own home
BATTERED and bruised – this is how a gang of yobs left a disabled 92-year-old former doctor after breaking into his home.
William Benson was found by his carer lying in his blood-soaked bed – nine hours after he was attacked in the early hours of Friday.
The heartless criminals even failed to cover the 92-year-old up with blankets, leaving him freezing during the night.
Police are hunting the thugs and released this photograph of his injuries suffered in the attack, branded "cowardly" by Mr Benson's family.
A relative, who did not want to be named, said: "I only hope the people who carried out this offensive and cowardly crime never have to face anything similar happening to their loved ones.
"They must surely realise their despicable and cowardly behaviour is offensive to so many people, and unacceptable to the whole of society. What a shame they are not real men."
Police believe three men, aged in their 20s, broke into Mr Benson's home in Stanley, County Durham.
They demanded cash before beating him and wrecking his home.
Mr Benson, who is wheelchair-bound after losing part of his leg, relies on carers to look after him.
He was treated at the University Hospital of North Durham, and is now being cared for in a nursing home.
Mr Benson worked in Stanley for 50 years as a GP, following in his father's footsteps.
Det Chief Inspector Paul Goundry, of Durham police, said: "This was a cowardly attack by thieves who used unnecessary and excessive violence."
Neighbour Gordon Armstrong, 93, said: "For someone to attack him like that at his time of life is scandalous."
