You'd be barking mad to miss our fashion show
ONE of the Gazette fashion show's main sponsors this year – Pet-Supermarket – is no stranger to supporting charities.
Giving is part of the South Tyneside-based company's ethos, which is why it's on board for our annual show – Fashion High-fliers.
When Pet-Supermarket managing director Mark Berriman heard about the show, he was keen to take part.
He said: "It is great to see so many local businesses coming together to raise money and I am really happy Pet-Supermarket can be part of that.
"We are always looking for ways to get involved with the local community, and are delighted to be supporting the youngsters involved in the fashion show, and the entertainment on the night."
Earlier in the year, Pet-Supermarket presented Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter with a cheque for almost 11,000 from a fundraising effort over the festive period.
And the region's largest rehoming centre is set to receive more support from Pet-Supermarket just by shopping at its online store Pet-Supermarket.co.uk.
For every order placed in support of the charity, which has two shelters at Benton Farm and Claremont Road, Newcastle, Pet-Supermarket will donate five per cent of the amount spent.
Four years ago Mark came up with the idea of Pet-Supermarket after getting dog Charlie, a chocolate-coloured labrador.
Today, Pet-Supermarket is the UK's largest online supplier of pet products, and the future is looking very exciting for Mark and his team.
Last year, Mark won The North East Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2007.
Mark, now 28, first started showing potential as a businessman as an eight-year-old in junior school, when his teacher gave his class the task of coming up with a school project.
While all the other kids were coming up with ideas for new toys or sweets, Mark created a business plan for a bus company.
Mark started his own business in 2000 when he came up with the idea of setting up a website to sell alcoholic gifts. And Gifts2Drink was born.
And in October 2003 he formed Viverdi Ltd – a consultancy company.
And Pet-Supermarket has recently launched a free expert healthcare service on their sister site www.pet-health-care.co.uk.
Users can log on and search the knowledge-base for answers to their questions about pet care, or ask experts for advice relating to health, nutrition or behaviour.
This service is free, and should pets require medication this can be purchased through Pet-Supermarket.co.uk and its partnership with Vetline Direct.
And if you prefer to shop in person rather than online, Pet-Supermarket is now open every Saturday and Sunday for the public to come and wander around and meet staff.
Based in Aidan Court, Bede Industrial Estate, the doors are open from 10am to 4pm for customers to take advantage of the supermarket's fantastic prices.
Pet-Supermarket has a three-year deal until next summer with South Shields Cricket Club, and aims to carry on supporting the club into the future.
Mark said: "Having been increasingly successful recently it is great to be working with the cricket club now, a local business we hope to continue our partnership."
Fashion High-fliers is being held on Friday and Saturday, July 25 and 26, at the Customs House, Mill Dam, South Shields.
It will raise money for our two charities, the Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund, and Cancer Connections.
Its main sponsors are Pet-Supermarket and Thompsons Solicitors.
Asda in Boldon, Colman's, Beamish Hall, Barbour, Desire By Debenhams, L'Amour Bridal, Port of Tyne, South Tyneside College, Specsavers and Tavistock Leisure, are also sponsoring the event.
Tickets for Fashion High-fliers are now on sale, priced 10, including a goody bag and great prizes up for grabs.
