Man suffers serious injuries as Land Rover overturns at bottom of Penshaw Monument

Police are dealing with a "serious collision" after a Land Rover overturned on Chester Road.

Officers were called at around 2.30pm after reports of the incident at bottom of the Penshaw Monument.

Emergency services attended and the road has been closed in both directions to assist those who have attended the scene.

A police spokesman said: "The male driver of the vehicle has been taken to hospital with serious injuries. Nobody else was inside when it overturned.

"Diversions are currently in place at the Shiney Row roundabout but there is a lot of congestion in the area and drivers are asked to try and avoid the area.

"Anyone who saw the collision is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log 608 16/06/17."
