METRO passengers travelling between South Shields and Jarrow have been hit by delays after a lorry crashed into a bridge.

The trains were taken out of service at 1.40pm, today, after the vehicle struck a bridge used by the Metro on the Bede Industrial Estate.

Structural engineers were needed to confirm the safety of the bridge before services were allowed to operate.

The Metros were suspended for about an hour.
