DRUMS ... Hebburn & Sunderland Sea Cadets management committee is gearing up to celebrating the 80th anniversary.

A SOUTH Tyneside sea cadet unit is celebrating its 80th anniversary.

Hebburn and Sunderland Sea Cadets is hoping to reunite past and present members to celebrate the milestone year.

The cadets are marking the occasion by holding a fun day at their unit, at The Mountbatten Memorial Building in Prince Consort Road Industrial Estate, Hebburn, on Sunday, August 10, and they’re hoping to invite along members from years gone by.

The event, which runs from noon to 5pm, is set to include a barbecue and band contest between current cadets and past members.

George Bone, chairman of the unit’s management committee, said: “I joined the sea cadets and band when I was 13 years old in 1967, and now that we’re approaching our 80th anniversary, we’re hoping to see some of the old faces again. We’re hoping to get some of the band members from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s to come along to have a little competition with the current band members.

“It’ll be a lot of fun and it’ll be great to see some old faces come back for a visit.

“We’ve been getting in touch with a lot of the past members on Facebook, and there’s about 60 or 70 of us now sharing stories about what the sea cadets was like in our day, so we’re trying to get everyone to come along for the fun day, but of course anyone who would like to come along is welcome.”

The veterans’ band practices at the unit every Thursday, from 7pm, and all Hebburn bandsmen are welcome to attend.

Tickets for the fun day cost £4 for adults, £3 for children, or £10 for a family. For more information, or to buy tickets, contact George on 07595 050780 or e-mail at hebburn.scc.chairman@me.com
