MODEL railway enthusiasts are getting on the tracks for their silver anniversary.

Members of Perth Green Model Railway Club in Jarrow will mark their first 25 years in an exhibition this weekend.

The display will feature 18 layouts, with model railway enthusiasts from as far away as Kent showcased.

Last week, Coun Alan Kerr, deputy leader of South Tyneside Council, and deputy mayor Coun Ernest Gibson, plus other civic guests, helped unveil a plaque to launch the exhibition, which will be held at Perth Green Community Centre in Inverness Road, the Scotch Estate, Jarrow, on Saturday and Sunday.

Coun Kerr, himself a model railway enthusiast, said: “Our hobby tends to bring with it a certain amount of perfectionism.

“So I can tell you I’ve had quite a few attempts to get my own layout just right.”

Members of Jarrow and Boldon community area forum recently agreed a £1,500 grant to the Jarrow club.

The money was used to fund this weekend’s exhibition, which has cost more than £3,600 to stage. Formed in 1988, the club provides a forum for model railway fans from across South Tyneside and beyond.

As the club celebrates its 25th anniversary, plans have been revealed for members to forge links with a model railway club in France.

The silver celebration exhibition will be held at Perth Green CC on Saturday, between 10am and 5pm, and from 10am until 4pm on Sunday.

Ticket prices include £5 for adults, £2 for children and £12 for a family ticket.

For more details, visit the club’s website at www.perthgreenmrc.org.
